Congrats to ISTC-PC and UW Professor Shyam Gollakota on being named to MIT Technology Review’s 2014 TR35 list of 35 innovators under 35. Shyam was honored for his research using RF as a human gesture detector and his innovative work on ambient backscatter. Shyam joined the UW faculty in 2012 and joined the ISTC-PC in 2014. Congrats Shyam !

Three UW ISTC PhD students and postdocs have recently and have taken permanent positions. Cynthia Matuszek will be joining the CS faculty at the University of Maryland Baltimore County this fall. Miro Enev has taken a position with Belkin. Aruna Balasubramanian will be joining the CS faculty at Stonybrook in the fall. Finally, Sidhant Gupta has joined the Computational User Experience group at Microsoft Research. Congrats Cynthia, Miro, Aruna and Sidhant!

Congratulations to ISTC-PC and UW faculty member Josh Smith and his grad student and longtime ISTC-PC student Aaron Parks on winning the Best Paper Award at IEEE RFID 2014 for their paper “Sifting Through the Airwaves: Efficient and Scalable Multiband RF Harvesting.”
Congrats to ISTC-PC and UW faculty member Jeff Bilmes and his student Rishabh Iyer for winning an outstanding paper award at the Neural Information Processing Systems (NIPS) conference in December, 2013 for the paper “Submodular Optimization with Submodular Cover and Submodular Knapsack Constraints”. NIPS is one of the world’s top conferences in this field and only a very small percentage of papers receive this honor. Well done Jeff and Rishabh!
